Every idea has power. One way to harness the power of your idea is to define a complete picture of your book idea. Here is the power of my idea for my book Fixing Your Feet. See how I have identified each element. Do the same with your idea. This exercise will help you fine-tune your idea. Print it out and post it where it will be a reminder of your hook, purpose, audience, and distinctiveness of your book.
Genre: nonfiction book
Your Title: Fixing Your Feet: Prevention and Treatments for Athletes
Your Hook (1 sentence): To help athletes prevent and fix foot problems, improve their foot comfort, and increase their running successes.
Description and Purpose (1-3 sentences): A reference book that provides athletes with a complete source of information about proper foot care. It teaches athletes to be proactive to prevent problems, reactive to fix problems, and gives products that help prevent and fix problems.
Audience (1 sentence): All athletes, especially runners, adventure racers and backpackers, and those involved in extreme sports.
Distinctiveness (1 sentence): A book that details all aspects of foot care for athletes, tells and shows what to do, and lists products and sources.
Format and Packaging (1-2 sentences): A perfect bound, 5½ by 8½ book, including a detailed index and listings of hundreds of foot care products.
Author Qualifications (1-2 sentences): A runner, ultrarunner, fastpack backpacker, paramedic, and orthopaedic technician who has worked medical and foot care aid at ultramarathons.
