How
To Find HOT & Profitable Productsby
Rosalind Gardner
We all want to make money online - that much we know.
But lots of us get stuck trying to figure out what we should sell.
We want to find the 'perfect' product. One that is a big seller in a huge and increasing market.
Knowing that much about your product is good, but how do you begin to find out whether or not such a product exists?
Well, start with yourself.
After coming up with a few topics, find out whether there are related products sold online through affiliate programs.
Considering that everything from soup to nuts; and tinker toys to real Mercedes can be found on eBay, AND that eBay has an affiliate program, it's likely you WILL find a related product or two to sell.
However, because you'll want to make more per sale than the 5 cents eBay pays per bid placed through your affiliate link, you should also look for products at Commission Junction, Linkshare and the other big affiliate networks.
Don't spend too much time analyzing commission rates at this point though.
First you should make sure there's a market for your product.
Ask yourself, does my product solve a problem for huge amounts of people who have money that they are willing to spend online?
The quickest way to find out how many people are interested in your product, is to use Overture's search term suggestion tool at:
If your chosen topic was 'teeth whiteners', you might be a little disappointed to find out that only 4,506 people searched for 'tooth whitener' in December.
However, if you picked 'diet', you'd be happy to see that there were 307,270 searches in the same month!
If all the topics you chose come up with meager search results, it's time to rethink your approach.
Remember that you are selling to humans with wants and needs which are the same as they've always been. People want more money, higher self esteem, more and better sex, improved health and to be more beautiful.
So give them what they want. Offer solutions to their problems, and the more common the problem, the more demand there will be for solutions.
You may now be thinking that 'everyone and his brother is selling diet products online'.
Oh? Are YOU selling diet products online? Is your wife, husband, girlfriend, boyfriend, mother, father, aunt, uncle, neighbour, friends, co-workers, cousins, sister OR your brother?
I'll bet that not ONE of those folks is selling diet products online.
I'd also be willing to bet that half or more of those people either NEED or WANT diet or nutritional products, though.
Let demand fuel your choices, not potential competition. Learn from the latter to build a better site.
Where competition is a consideration is in the pay per click search engines.
Using Overture again, I visit the "View Bids" tool at:
http://uv.bidtool.overture.com/
Although the keyword 'diet' comes in at a hefty $1.75 per click, you must remember that it is only one of hundreds of diet and nutrition keywords that will be related to your site.
On a positive note, the more expensive the top bid, the more lucrative the niche. Advertisers tend not to pay massive amounts if the returns are peanuts.
Too, Overture isn't the only game in town when it comes to pay per click advertising. Their minimum bid is 10 cents, but there are lots of PPC engines where the minimum bid is still just a penny.
There are a couple of good software solutions that will save you time and money while doing this research.
I use and recommend Wordtracker to identify market size, define specific target/niche markets, spot trends and surges of interest and improve my search engine positions through enhanced meta tags.
The Wordtracker Keyword Report is published each Saturday and distributed to over 100,000 webmasters. Wordtracker will send you both the 24-hour and 60-day keyword reports which include the top 500 frequently searched words on the Internet, free of charge every week.
Wordtracker is an keyword analysis tool that those of us in the online advertising world have used for years to help us understand what keywords are popular. Their online interface is easy to use and the service is very low cost.

I also frequently use Niche Finder. Research that would normally take a few hours at least, takes less than five minutes with Niche Finder and it calculates the real potential of my business ideas.

Another tool that I like is Adwords Analyzer. It works quickly to identify underdeveloped niches worth building new sites around.

On a limited budget? Or you've read about all the different software but still can't decide?
Use Wordtracker's free trial first. When your first site starts earning revenue, then invest in the nifty software.
I do love those time-saving tools.
Time IS money, and the sooner you can nail down a profitable niche and get your site online bringing in the green, the sooner you can work on developing your next lucrative idea!
